Dr. Bidwell Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Dr. Leonard Bidwell’s family recently established Rutgers-Camden’s first endowed scholarship in Mathematics in his memory. When discussing the scholarship, his daughter Sylvia (DC ’90) and son Nicholas, expressed that they wanted to carry on their father’s memory in a meaningful and lasting way. Dr. Bidwell taught in the Mathematics department at Rutgers-Camden for over 30 years. Colleagues describe Len as a dedicated teacher who cared more about his students than advancing his career through research and publication. Serving as the department mentor, Len encouraged his most advanced students to participate in the Putnam and other national mathematics competitions.

As a mathematician, Len carried his experience into all walks of life. He stored practice Putnam exams in his garage and created extra homework assignments for his children. Upon his passing in 2002, faculty, staff, friends, and family contributed to a memorial award for outstanding students in the Mathematics department. By endowing the scholarship, the Bidwell family has ensured that Len’s memory will remain part of the fabric of Rutgers-Camden in perpetuity.
